Hollywood sensation Halle Berry recently opened up about the behind-the-scenes drama during the making of her iconic film, Monster’s Ball, revealing that her then-husband, Eric Benet, had some serious reservations about certain scenes. In Monster’s Ball, Berry delivered a powerful performance that won her an Oscar, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing. One particular love scene with Billy Bob Thornton required her to shed her clothes, marking only the second time she had gone nude for a film. Berry admitted that the experience was far from pleasant and challenging to comprehend for those not in the film industry.
“We’re not doing what it looks like we’re doing, and I think sometimes it’s hard for people to wrap their brain [around that],” she explained in an interview with the Chicago Tribune. “There’s a roomful of people, and it’s very calculated in a way.” However, what really bothered Benet wasn’t the steamy love scenes but rather the emotionally intense moments where Berry’s character belittles and abuses her overweight child in the film.
“That was just as uncomfortable for him in a different way,” Berry revealed. “He has a daughter, and I’m now her mother. To see someone abuse a child like that and to have it be me, his wife — he thought, Oh, my God, who’s this monster?” Despite the discomfort, Berry expressed gratitude for Benet’s support, emphasizing his understanding of her journey as an actress and as a black woman.
“But Eric is so supportive of who I am and where I am trying to go as an actress and as a black woman. So it was refreshing to know that he could see the movie and not feel insecure about it, or be like a ball and chain. He’s very much about letting me fly,” she added. Interestingly, Berry wasn’t initially considered for the role in Monster’s Ball. Despite director Marc Forster’s reservations, Berry campaigned passionately for the part, convincing him with her dedication.
“I just wouldn’t go away,” Berry recalled. “I was just really passionate about it, and at the end of the day, I think I just wore him down.” Forster clarified that Berry didn’t wear him down but acknowledged her commitment to the role. “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to have a glamorous movie star in the role, and also I wasn’t sure if she would be willing to do the sex scene as I envisioned it because she is a movie star,” Forster explained. “So we met, and I brought up my concerns, and she said she would de-glamorize herself and she understood what I was going for in the lovemaking scene, and she said she would be willing to go there.”
Berry also had a heart-to-heart with her on-screen son, concerned that the young actor might take the disparaging words personally. She made an effort to comfort him and maintain a connection after the film wrapped. “That was harder than being butt-naked doing the love scene because he was a real child and he had real issues of obesity,” Berry shared. “I was really worried that, in making a movie, we could damage him in some way that would affect the rest of his life. So I talked to him a lot. Before and after every scene, I would hug and kiss him. And since the movie wrapped, I’ve stayed in his life. That’s important.” Love you guys, and thank you for watching, don’t forget to subscribe and like our video.
